Creative Digital Media Production BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma NQF at Lea Valley High School

Course description

The qualification is designed for post‐16 learners who want to study media related degree courses in Higher Education. Learners gain knowledge and understanding of creative digital media production and develop an understanding of how to work within the media industries.

Course content

This National Extended Diploma is worth 1080 guided learning hours (GLH) equivalent to three A Levels. 13 units of which 7 are mandatory and 4 are externally assessed. Mandatory content (70%) and External (30%).

Learners follow a general programme of study, learning digital production skills in variety of different media (film, animation, and magazine design).

The qualification is intended to be studied over two years in a learners study programme.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE A* ‐ C including Mathematics and English Language at grade C or better


The following 7 mandatory and 6 optional units offered by the centre will be taught and assessed externally and internally:


1 - Media Representations (90 GLH) (MANDATORY) - ONLINE EXAM

2 - Working in the Creative Media Industry (90 GLH) (MANDATORY) - INTERNAL EXAM

3 - Digital Media Skills (120 GLH) (MANDATORY) - CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT

4 - Pre-Production Portfolio (90 GLH) (MANDATORY) - INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

5 - Specialist Subject Investigation (120 GLH) (MANDATORY) - CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT


8 - Responding to a Commission (120 GLH) (MANDATORY) - CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT


The remaining six units to be taught and assessed are on topics such as film production, scriptwriting, single camera techniques, 2D animation and film editing.


Assessment is by three assessment methods:

Internal Assessment - marked by their class teacher

Controlled Assessment - set and marked by Examining Body (Pearson)

Wrtten/Online Exam - set and marked by Examining Body (Pearson)

Future opportunities

The course allows you to access apprenticeships or to study higher level courses, including foundation degrees, undergraduate degrees and/or BTEC Higher Nationals in a wide range of subjects, not just media. Career opportunities include Film Maker, Camera Operator, Animator, TV/Film Editor and Researcher.
