Chemistry A Level at Highfields School

Course description

What is Chemistry?
Studying the principles of physical, inorganic and organic Chemistry and exploring these through experimental work.

AS Course content
During the course students will look at the relationship between atomic structure, chemical reactivity and patterns in the Periodic Table. This leads onto an introduction to organic chemistry, including pollution and global warming, and the social and economic aspects of transition metals extraction.
A2 Course content
The A2 course provides an opportunity for practical investigations to explore thermodynamics, transition metals, organic chemistry and their applications in
industry and medicine.
During the summer students carry out a drugs project where they make and analyse Aspirin. They also research the drug thalidomide and deliver a PowerPoint
presentation on their findings.


100% examination
AS has two module exams and A2 has three module exams with assessment of practical skills part of these written module exams.
A separate endorsement of practical skills will be taken alongside the A-Level which will be assessed by teachers.
