Religous Studies A Level at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College

Course description

This course consists of two units: Philosophy of Religion and Islam. Pupils do not need any prior knowledge of the subjects but they do need a good grounding in Religious Education and must have at least a C in either Short or Full Course RE GCSE.

Course content

AS Philosophy Paper
The Cosmological Argument, religious experience, psychology and religion, atheism and postmodernism.

AS Islam Paper
The Qur’an, the Five Pillars of Islam, the doctrine of God and key beliefs.

A2 Philosophy Paper
Life, death and beyond.

A2 Islam Paper
The Shari’ah and the Muslim way of life, Shi’a Islam, God and humanity and women and family life.

Assessment

For the AS there are two 1.15 hour exam papers. Candidates must answer two essay questions from a choice of four.

For the A2 there are two 1.30 hour exam papers. Candidates must answer two essay questions from a choice of four in the Islam exam and write an extended essay for the Philosophy exam.
