Course description

Who is it for?

• Anyone who is interested in dance, the arts and theatre and would like to broaden their knowledge.

• People hoping to go into the theatre, teaching or dance as a profession.

• People who would like a creative contrast to a scientific or mathematical course of study.

• Anyone. It is counted as a university entrance requirement for most courses.

Course content

What will I study during the AS course & how will it be assessed?

Unit 1: Understanding Dance (Examination)

In this unit you will study dance based anatomy and physiology, safe studio practice, treatment of injuries and analysis of professional dance works. This is a theoretical unit with a written examination.40% of AS, 20% of A Level

Unit 2: Choreography and Performance (Coursework)

This is a practical unit which requires you to choreograph and perform a solo dance from a given stimuli and perform in a group dance which has been choreographed by the teacher or a visiting artist.60% of AS, 30% of A LevelWhat will I study during the A2 course & how will it be assessed?

Unit 3: Dance Appreciation: Content and Context (Examination)

This is a theoretical unit which will involve an in-depth study of a specified period of dance history chosen from American Musical, Ballet or Modern Dance, and detailed analysis of a set professional work. There is a written examination at the end of this unit.25% of A Level

Unit 4: Group Choreography and Solo Performance (Practical Examination)

This practical unit requires you to perform a solo dance of between 2 and 3 minutes long which is influenced by the work of a professional dance artist that you have studied during the course. You also choreograph a group dance from a given stimuli in which you do not dance yourself.25% of A Level
