BTEC First Diploma in Business Studies at Weston Favell Academy

Course content

You will study six units looking at various elements of how a business works.  The first unit is an introduction to business it investigates a wide range of business activities and a businesses aims and objectives.  The second unit looks at how businesses operate in the business environment focusing on how they operate with their customers and competitors Unit three investigates the financial duties of a business from completing financial accounts to deciding on the most profitable investment. The forth unit of study investigates how businesses communicate both internally and externally.  The fifth unit studied looks how businesses should provide good customer service to increase sales. The sixth unit involves the students setting up their own business.

Entry requirements

Whilst it is not a pre-requisite that you studied this subject during Year 11, it is envisaged that your GCSE, or equivalent, grades will be below the 5 Cs necessary to do A Levels. It would be preferable to have some passes at C and some at D, however.


You will complete six units of assignment work for your portfolio, one of which is set by the exam board.  Your assignments will use a range of methods to assess your performance, for example, time-constrained assessments, work-place assignments, performance observation and case studies. All your work will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Future opportunities

You can study the subject further at BTEC National level, enter employment in business or start an A level course.
