Mathematics A Level at St Vincent College

Course description

Building on the skills from GCSE, this course further develops algebraic skills and introduces new concepts from pure mathematics such as logarithms and calculus. It also provides the opportunity to study one application of mathematics in statistics or mechanics.

Course content

AS Level

Core Unit 1 will cover:

• Basic algebra
• Coordinate geometry
• Polynomials
• Proof

Core Unit 2 will cover:

• Sequences and series
• Further trigonometry
• Calculus
• Logarithms

Unit S1 will cover:

• Probability
• Data Analysis
• Binomial Distribution
• Hypothesis Testing

A Level

Core Unit 3 will cover:

• Numerical solutions of equations
• Exponential and natural logarithms
• Functions
• Further calculus
• Further trigonometry

Core Unit 4 will cover:

• Vectors
• Algebra
• Further calculus
• Simple differential equations

Unit S2 will cover:

• Normal Distribution
• Poisson Distribution
• Chi-squared
• Bivariate data

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade A*-C, one of which must be Mathematics at grade B or above. Students also taking Physics may take the course with a Grade B in maths subject to the approval of the Curriculum Manager


End of unit examinations and one piece of coursework in the A2 year

Financial information

• Students have opportunities to attend conferences at Southampton University
• The UK Senior Maths Challenge is offered each autumn term
