IBDP Biology (Higher Level & Standard Level) at Broadgreen International School

Course description

Biology Higher is allocated four lessons per week split between two teachers.

Year 1: Core and extension modules are covered in the following areas; Cells, Chemistry of Life, Genetics, Human Physiology, Ecology, Human Health and Physiology. Practical work also supports these modules and forms the coursework for IB Biology.

Year 2: Extension modules are covered in Nerves, Excretion, Plant Science, Respiration and Photosynthesis. In addition, one in-depth module is studied on neurobiology and behaviour. All Group 4 students take part in a collaborative project.

Entry requirements

Grades A*-C in at least 6 GCSE subjects. Of these, English and Maths must be at Grade C or above. As well as an academic requirement, we expect you to demonstrate an interest in world events and a commitment to making a difference in your community. World citizenship is at the heart of the IB philosophy and we will be discussing your interests, experiences and aspirations at your interview.

The course requires a certain amount of independent research and study. You should be well-organised, able to work on your own, able to work to deadlines and have good IT skills. You should also have an interest in the living world and how it works.

Future opportunities

This course can lead to access to higher education courses in biological, ecological, medical and environmental sciences. It also prepares students to work in a logical and questioning manner, skills valued by any employer.
