Latin AS Level at Bishop Wordsworth's Grammar School

Course description

At AS level you will study:

Latin Language: this consists of two unseen passages for which there is a prescribed
vocabulary.
 
Latin Prose and Verse Literature: consisting of 235 lines of each genre examined by translation, comprehension and short essay.

Entry requirements

Grade A or above in GCSE Latin is normally required.
 
A successful candidate not only has the precision necessary for accurate translation, and a genuine interest in the Roman world, its peoples and institutions, but also enjoys reading and analysing history and poetry.

Assessment

There are two AS modules:
The Language module consists of translating two graded pieces of Latin - there are no
comprehension questions on this module.
 
The Literature paper requires some translation, but there are also comprehension questions on both content and the written style of the author. There is also one short essay question on each author.
 
Each module will be examined by a 90 minute examination at the end of Year 12. There is no coursework.

Future opportunities

At university: Latin, Classics, Classical Studies, Ancient History, Archaeology, Law,
Anthropology, Philosophy, Theology even Medicine. Latin combines well with English and Modern foreign languages.
 
There are many classical scholars in the Civil Service, Politics, Banking, Business Management, Accountancy, Computer Programming; Teaching, Literature, and the Army. Student destinations are available within the department.
