Animal Care Intermediate Diploma at Derby College

Course description

This is an ideal course for anyone who would like to work in the animal care industry.  Combining theory and practical work, it includes a period of industry experience.

Course content

You will study:

  • Health and Welfare
  • Practical Animal Feeding
  • Animal Accommodation
  • Work-related Experience
  • Basic Principles of Animal Biology
  • Animal Behaviour and Handling
  • British Wildlife Species
  • Habitats and Rehabilitation

In addition to these units, you will study Functional Skills.

Entry requirements

You need GCSEs at grade D or above in English and Science, plus two other academic GCSEs at grade E.  Alternatively, you can join the course with a Merit grade in Level 1 or Foundation Animal Care qualifications.

You must have a minimum of a Merit grade to progress to an Advanced Diploma.

Assessment

You will be continually assessed throughout the year.  The various assessment methods include written reports, practical assessments, online tests and work placement reports.

Financial information

You will need protective clothing - a Derby College lab coat (which will be available to purchase at enrolment) and steel toe-capped footwear - when working with animals.  You will also need writing materials and a folder.  A memory stick for use with PCs is strongly recommended.

Future opportunities

You can consider taking your qualification to the next level with a City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Animal Care. You can also progress within your career in the animal care industry
