GCSE Mathematics at Calderdale College

Course description

This course is modular and studied at the higher/foundation tier.

Course content

The topics covered are statistics, number, space and shape and Algebra. There are three modules as follows:-Module l: Statistics (studied at Higher tier) Module 2: Number (studied at Higher tier) Module 3: Space and shape and algebra (studied at Foundation tier)

The emphasis is on student centred learning. There are some lectures, some group work.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold an existing minimum grade D at GCSE or Key Skills Level 2 in Mathematics and undergo an interview with the course leader. If you do not have these entry requirements you can apply for the Numeracy Workshops which will give you an equivalent qualification. Mature students without a D grade may be accepted onto the course following an interview with the course leader.

An interview with specialist tutor


Modules l, 2 and 3 are assessed by examinations. These would normally be held in November, March and June respectively. There is one paper for each examination. There will be weekly assignments set and marked by the tutor.

Future opportunities

To any level 3 programme of study. To employment - many employers require a pass at GCSE Maths. To some university degree courses together with relevant level qualifications, particularly teaching, nursing and psychology.
