Textiles AS Level at Nelson Thomlinson School
Two practical products inspired by fashion and design of the 19th/20th Century. This Portfolio of work will include design ideas, research, and technical information. The written exam includes theory of textiles including fibres and fabrics, materials and components, industrial links, use of smart and technical fibres, and Product analysis.
No specific entry requirements but GCSE Textiles would be an advantage.
• Students need to have an artistic flair and have a broad base of textiles skills.
• Potential candidates must possess adequate self-discipline with an ability to work independently on long term projects.
• They must be enthusiastic, inquisitive and prepared to solve problems.
Unit 1 – TEXT1 Materials, Components and Application
50% of AS
2 hour written paper
Unit 2 – TEXT2 Learning through Designing and Making
Two project portfolio approach
50% of AS
Coursework – approximately 50 hours
A-Level Textiles can lead on to a BA degree in fashion design, theatre and costume design, textile design, fashion marketing and business, fashion journalism or a BSc. degree in textile technology, textile technology and design, marketing, textile manufacturing/engineering.
It can also be useful for a wide range of jobs in fashion and technical clothing production, pattern cutters, machinists, quality managers, brand managers, interior designers, printed/woven fabric manufacture, innovative yarn and knitwear production. Also, careers in the media, education, TV and theatre costume design, retail industry, conservation and restoration of textiles, marketing, buying, and journalism.
