Physics A Level at The Whitehaven Academy
Physics is a really enjoyable subject which, although challenging, allows you to develop a greater understanding of science in the world.
The course consists of the following mandatory units:
- Measurements and their errors
- Particles and radiation
- Mechanics and materials
- Further mechanics and thermal physics
- Fields and their consequences
- Nuclear physics
In Year 13, you are able to select one of the following optional units:
- Medical physics
- Engineering physics
- Turning points in physics
Students wishing to take this subject should have ideally achieved a grade B pass, or higher, in Physics and one other science OR a B in Science and a B in Additional Science, together with a grade C in English and in Maths.
AS – 2 written examination papers
A2 – 3 written examination papers
There are a wide range of university courses and careers associated with the Physical Sciences. There are those which are very obviously connected with Physics such as theoretical physics, mechanical engineering, astronomy, chemical engineering, medicine etc. There are, however, many other courses and careers where having an A level in Physics would be useful, including architecture, energy management, aviation, medical physics and particle physics.
Career prospects are very good for physical science graduates, particularly in this region with Sellafield and The Energy Coast employment opportunities.
