About the Certificate in Human Respource Practice (CHRP)

The new Certificate in Human Resource Practice provides a firm foundation in all the areas of HR, as well as an understanding of HR in a business context.  It will help students develop and practice relevant skills and above all, will give the confidence to be more effective at work.  Studying the programme will give a sound understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviour required of a professional HR practitioner, of how HR activities support organisational strategy and also give ability to analyse HR information to inform decision making.

The CHRP is a CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) Level 3 Foundation qualification and is the equivalent to a Level 3 NVQ or taught programme.

Course content

The CHRP is for those new to HR, those interested in moving into HR, those working in a support fole in HR and who wish to develop their knowledge and skills, line managers who are involved in HR and those who have responsibility for HR activities and decisions within an organiation without a specialist function and for HR staff who do not have sufficient qualifications to undertake a CIPD Intermediate or Advanced Level qualification.

The course consists of 7 units covering the professional areas of resourcing talent, performance management and reward, job analysis, supporting change, understanding organisations and the role of HR, developing as an HR practitioner and recording, analysing and using HR information.  Subjects allow students to build a practical qualification and a tool kit to utilise in the workplace. 

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements to the programme although those applying need to be interviewed to assess suitability for the programme.


Assessment is via written assignments, presentations and skills elements and requires 140 hours individual study in addition to the 140 hours of taught study.

Registration fees are payable to CIPD. There are no fee waivers available for this course

Future opportunities

Successful students may continue into Higher Education within the College on the Foundation Degree in Business and Management or other appropriate Higher Education programme depending on previous qualifications.  Successful students can also progress to the Intermediate Level of study within the C.I.P.D. Professional Map.
