Law AS & A Level at Banbury Academy

Course description

A course based on these specifications will provide a grounding in the main principles of English and Welsh law and their development, and will enable candidates to develop knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of the structure, personnel and functions of the English legal system and, for Advanced GCE, of two areas of substantive law chosen from Criminal Law, Law of Contract or Law of Torts. It also encourages candidates to develop the skills necessary to analyse and solve problems by applying legal rules and to develop the ability to communicate legal arguments and conclusions clearly and succinctly.

Entry requirements

English Language at grade B and above


At AS level student take two externally‐assessed examinations, 1 hour 30 minutes, Unit 1 – LAW01: Law Making and the Legal System, Unit 2 – LAW02: The Concept of Liability Both worth of 50% of AS, 25% of A Level Available in May or June only.

At A2 level students take also two externally‐assessed examinations, Unit 3 – LAW03 Criminal Law (Offences against the Person) or Contract worth 25% of A Level, 1 hour 30 minutes and Unit 4 – LAW04 Criminal Law (Offences against Property) or Tort, and Concepts of Law worth 25% of A Level, 2 hours Available in June only.

Future opportunities

The study of law helps develop the learner’s analytical ability and critical thinking. It also develops problem‐solving skills through the application of legal rules. Study at AS/A2 level provides a useful background for the further study of law either as the main subject or subsidiary part of a degree, foundation degree or for the many professional qualifications which have a law component. Material studied would be also useful for candidates intending to pursue business careers.
