Level 1 Combined Diploma (Outdoor Learning) at Newton Rigg College

Course description

This course allows you to choose and explore an area that interests you the most and potentially may consider for future progress to higher levels or towards related employment. The course involves lectures, practical skills and site visits. Throughout the course you will build up a portfolio of evidence, while being assessed on a number of tasks completed with a range of different ways to capture achievement.

Course content

 Three option areas*:

• Agriculture • Animal care • Health and Social Care

Core Themes:

• Employability skills • Personal development • English and maths

*Optional areas available will be dependent on sufficient student numbers


These are practically oriented, vocational courses for those

with enthusiasm but little experience. You will spend as much

time as possible outside the classroom learning by doing. At

least half of your week at college will be spent engaging in

practical activities such as grooming animals, milking cows,

fencing and conservation projects, all of which will build your

skills for your future. You will also spend time each week

practising Functional Skills, English, Maths and ICT, along

with working on your employability skills.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications required but, an enthusiasm for one

or more of the subject areas is essential.
