Mathematics A level (Mechanics option) at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School
With the increased popularity of A-Level Mathematics in the past few years we are able to offer a wider choice of qualifications to fit your interests and needs.
This course is particularly helpful to students taking AS Physics, Chemistry or ICT and those planning degrees or careers in engineering, electronics, computing, technology, aeronautics, etc.
AS and A2 mathematics courses build on the skills you will have learnt to gain a good GCSE in mathematics. However there are some brand-new topics in mechanics and decision mathematics which will be new to you.
The general aims of sixth form mathematics include:
- Exploring mathematics for the fun, enjoyment and challenge of it.
- To develop your mathematical skills, creativity and communication.
- To develop thinking and analytical skills that will be useful in a wide range of work and study contexts.
- To support your study of physics, chemistry, biology, business studies, ICT, geography and psychology in the sixth form.
- To support advanced study of mathematics at university, either as a subject in its ownright or as part of another degree course. (You should note that some universities will require double mathematics A-levels for entry to mathematics degrees: see the Further Mathematics booklet.)
- To improve your employability and to help you understand the world in deeper ways.
There are eighteen mathematics modules altogether in the Edexcel A-Level Mathematics suite. Just three are needed for an AS qualification and another three for the A2. In this Mathematics (Mechanics) route, we will take the following modules: AS Modules
Functions, algebra and graphs; co-ordinate geometry; sequences and series; an introduction to differentiation and integration.
A development of the C1 topics, plus trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms.
Using 'decision mathematics' to solve business problems using algorithms. Graphs, networks, critical path analysis and linear programming.A2 Modules
An extension of the C2 topics, especially trigonometry, differentiation and numerical methods.
Buillding on sound knowledge of C1, C2 and C3, we study vectors, integration of increasibgly difficult functions and solving differential equations.
Modelling with maths, vectors, particles moving in a line or plane, forces and moments.
To really flourish at A-Level mathematics you need to have an enquiring mind and determination.
You will probably have enjoyed mathematics for much of your time in school and have a good degree of fluency and flair with numbers.
Since there will be times that learning new skills will challenge your abilities, perhaps for the first time for you in mathematics, you will need the emotional resilience to cope with the stress of the short period before an idea begins to make sense.
You will have at least a C-grade in Mathematics at GCSE Higher Tier, but you will far more likely to complete the course successfully if you start with at least a grade B.
You will, of course, need a scientific calculator, but a graphical calculator and access to a PC may help. Please wait until you start the course to buy a graphical calculator as they vary considerably and we may wish to all use similar models.
A-Level Mathematics has a reputation for being hard. While there is some truth in this, it is also true that an unusually high proportion of A-Level Mathematics candidates get an A grade.
It is a powerful and important subject that will probably help you understand the world in a deeper sense and earn you better career prospects. Whether you have what it takes is up to you.
