Music A Level at Oldershaw Academy

Course description

It is the aim of the department that courses should be both stimulating and rewarding with scope for individual interests and aptitudes. AS and A2 Level Music is suitable for those who wish to follow further studies in Music at university or music college or for those who have a genuine interest in the subject and intend to pursue other options beyond A-Levels.

Course content

The course is very practical with an emphasis on performance and composition, with harmony, listening and appraisal skills using set pieces of music from a wide range of genres. At A2 students can choose to focus on either performance or compositions depending on their interest and skills. Set works are studied in more depth with additional training in Listening to and Appraising Music.

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in GCSE Music or Grade 5 or above Music exam pass. Good grades in other supporting subjects are likely to provide the best basis for success

Future opportunities

Music provides a suitable qualification for entry into all universities. It is particularly relevant for those considering careers as: Music teachers (NB Primary School teachers with Music as a subject are sought after), Recording Engineers, Music Therapists – how music helps those with difficulties in communicating i.e. psychological disorders/physical care, Army/bands, Music Journalism/Critic – critical analysis of recorded music or composing for television or film.
