Biology A Level at The Whitehaven Academy

Course description

Biology is engaging and interesting and allows you to gain a vast understanding of the world around you.

There are four broad areas of study consisting of:

  • Development of Practical Skills in Biology
  • Foundations in Biology
  • Exchange and Transport
  • Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease

Entry requirements

You need to have achieved at least a grade B in Biology and a C grade in Maths and English. (Students with grade Cs may be accepted onto the course after discussion with the Head of Science)


AS – 2 written examination papers

A2 – 3 written examination papers and a practical endorsement

Future opportunities

There are a wide range of university courses and careers associated with the biological sciences. There are those which are very obviously connected with biology such as medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science, physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

There are, however, many other courses and careers where having an A level in biology would be useful, including genetics, biotechnology and sports science. Career prospects are good for biological science graduates. Roughly half go straight into a job in industry or commerce and a little under a third go into the civil service or find work with local authorities.
