Course description

AS Level Unit 1 - Families and Households The relationships of the family to social changes; family and social policy. Marriage, divorce, changes in gender roles in the family; childhood; demographic trends in the UK in birth rates, death rates and family size. Unit 2 - The role and process of education Differential educational achievement by social class, gender and ethnicity. Relationships and processes within schools. Educational policy including selection, comprehensive schooling and marketisation. The application of sociological methods to education. A2 Level Unit 3 - Global Development Globalisation, aid and trade and their influence on relations between societies. Transnational corporations, NGOs and strategies for development. Development related to industrialisation, urbanisation, war and conflict. Employment, health, demographic change and gender as aspects of development. Unit 4 - Crime and Deviance Theories of crime, crime by age, ethnicity, gender, locality and social class; globalisation and crime. Crime control, prevention and punishment, victims and the role of the criminal justice system. Theory and Methods: Quantitative and qualitative methods of research, methods, theoretical, practical and ethical questions in research. Assessment: Written exam for each unit.
