Course description

Who is the programme for?Students over 16 who want to work towards a career in the nail industry.What is the programme structure?Theory and practical Mandatory Generic Units include:- Unit 201 Working in the beauty related industries Unit 202 Follow health and safety in the salon Unit 203 Client care and communication in beauty related industries additional Unit 205 Promote products and service to clients in a salon Mandatory Technical Units include:- Unit 207 Provide manicure treatments Unit 208 Provide pedicure treatments Unit 209 Apply make-up Unit 210 Provide eyelash and brow treatments Unit 212 Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector Unit 214 Provide and maintain nail enhancement Unit 215 Provide nail art Unit 216 Salon reception duties Unit 223 Apply skin tanning techniquesStudents yet to attain grade C in English and maths will work towards qualifications in these subjects, which are essential in preparing them for progression onto higher level study and /or employment.Requirements:- Wear professional uniform as recommended by the College including Black flat shoes- High standards of personal hygiene- Be able to work effectively with others and be willing to carry out and receive all treatments. You may be required to treat male clients- Excellent attendance is required (100% expected)- Remove all jewellery, including facial piercings (in line with Awarding Body requirements) - Hair must be well groomed and worn up if longAre there any special facilities for the programme?The College's nail studio offers a realistic working environment. Visits to nail exhibitions are also organised as part of the course.Students are encouraged to enter their work at competition level.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade D or above including maths and English; a school reference and successful interview.


Continuous assessment, comprising portfolio of evidence of work, observed practical work, on-line multi choice assessment.Examining Body - City & Guilds

Will there be any extra costs involved?Students will require a specialist equipment kit and salon uniform from the college designated supplier. This information is available from the department.

Future opportunities

Successful students may progress onto VRQ Level 3 Nail Services, or into employment.
