English Language AS at Sir George Monoux College

Course description

If you love reading, theatre, writing and language, you'll find plenty to interest you in our English Department. All classes take place in a dedicated suite of rooms where you will also find computers, DVDs and other resources to extend your studies. You may attend conferences, workshops and theatre performances. The teachers in the English department are passionate about their subject and pride themselves on their ability to transmit their enthusiasm and interest to the students.

Course content

Interested in how language works? Want to learn to express your opinions and ideas and construct a persuasive argument? This analytical and creative course will help you get to grips with grammar and learn to write in a variety of different styles. You will explore a wide range of different types of language in use, including conversation, regional dialects, journalism and literary texts. You'll also look at issues concerning language and social class, gender, power, attitudes to accents, how children acquire language and how language is constantly changing. In the second year you will have the chance to do a language investigation in an area that interests you.

To do this course you will need to meet our entry requirements.


Assessment is 40% course work and 60% exams

Future opportunities

A Level English can lead to a variety of exciting and challenging degrees. The communication and analytical skills you will have developed through studying these subjects will be useful in a whole range of applications.
