Travel and Tourism - Aviation Operations Diploma (Level 3) at Leeds City College

Course description

This course is designed to give you an in-depth understanding of the aviation industry and provide you with the skills to start your career.

You will be taight using the college's air cabin simulator as well as using training facilities at Leeds Bradford Airport, giving you an excellent insight into the industry. You will be given the opportunity to undertake fire and smoke and wet drills training.

You will complete the second year of the programme in-line with the aviation recruitment periods, to maximise your career opportunities.

Course content

The course is designed for students wishing to follow careers within the aviation industry or for students wishing to go on to Higher Education. The course also involves the use of the College Air Cabin Simulator as well as the training facilities we have at Leeds Bradford Airport giving you an excellent insight into the industry when seeking employment or further study. There will also be the opportunity to undertake the Fire and Smoke Training and Wet Drills training. There will also be the opportunity to undertake the Fire and Smoke Training.

Use this course to pursue your career within the aviation industry or go on to higher education. With the use of the College air cabin simulator and facilities at major UK/European airports, you’ll get an excellent insight into the workings of this fast paced environment.

Learning will be a combination of class-based and practical experience, with topics including handling air passengers, air travel information, meeting customer needs, health, safety and security and preparation for working in the aviation industry.

Students are required to wear a uniform for the duration of the programme.

Entry requirements

You must be 17+ and have 4 GCSE's at Grade C or equivalent and/or interview. The Aviation industry requires GCSE Grades C or above in English and Maths. An interview would be required to assess your suitability for the course. Please be aware to obtain an airside pass to enable you to work at an airport all aviation organisations will require you to complete a criminal record check. You must also possess a valid passport.


The course is assessed by a range of methods including assignment work and scenario based role plays. Your progress will be monitored by regular tutorials with your course tutor.

Future opportunities

The majority of students directly apply to work in the airline industry upon completion of the course. Students have been extremely successful in gaining roles both as Cabin Crew and Ground Staff with employers such as, Ryanair and Servisair. Students can also go onto Higher Education with courses such as the Foundation Degree in Tourism and Aviation.
