Health and Social Care AQA A Level at Poynton High School

Course description

This A Level is made up of units that offer you the opportunity to develop a range of practical skills and an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Health and Social Care in our society today.

Course content

Learning Method:
You will learn to use a variety of transferable skills throughout the course, which include collecting, analysing and interpreting data and communicating findings in different ways. You will undertake individual research as well as taking part in group activities and tutorials. There will be a heavy emphasis on you being responsible for your own learning, meeting deadlines and managing your portfolio of evidence. Your progress will be monitored carefully and you will be given regular feedback ensuring constant progression and improvement. The success rate on this course is very high.

Entry requirements

  • 5 grade Cs or above at GCSE level, Grade C in English Language is desirable.


Unit 1 Effective Care & Communication (portfolio)
Unit 2 Understanding Health Conditions & Patient Care Pathways (examination)
Unit 6 Practitioner Roles (portfolio)
Unit 10 Diagnosis, Treatment and Preventative Strategies.

Future opportunities

Having a good insight into a variety of career opportunities during the course you may wish to enter into employment directly. Alternatively you may wish to progress to Higher Education and undertake professional training to follow a career in areas such as nursing, childcare, teaching, social work, welfare and therapeutic services.
