Physics A Level at Havant Sixth form College
Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences: it encompasses study of the basic ingredients of matter starting at the quantum level; it enables the creation of new materials; and it challenges us with the discoveries of modern astrophysics and cosmology. A Level Physics lays the groundwork for all such concepts and most students go on to study physics-based subjects at university, or related disciplines like engineering. Physics is also an asset if you aim to study medicine, veterinary science or natural sciences.
As well as ‘pure’ physics like electrons, waves and photons and modelling the universe, you’ll study real-world topics including Car Safety and Medical Imaging.
You will require five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Mathematics plus grade 6 or above in two science subjects.
Physics is a two year linear course, this means it is studied for two years with exams at the end of the course. Over these two years you will be given the opportunity to gain a Practical Endorsement. This endorsement will be based on experimental work and be a clarification of your experimental skills. At the end of the two years your A Level grade will be based on written exams.
The majority of students successfully apply to Higher Education for a wide variety of subjects, dependent on the combination they have studied at the College. Some of the most related degrees which students have gone on to include physics, radiography, theoretical physics, astrophysics and physics.
We have excellent links with local companies and universities, particularly the University of Southampton, where you’ll take part in various extension activities. You’ll be encouraged to enter competitions, including the Physics Olympiad and attend talks by guest speakers. You may also opt to take relevant Open University modules. You may get the opportunity to visit CERN, Geneva and The Science Museum, London.
