Course description

AS: A one year course normally taken in year 12
Topics covered include:
Unit 1: Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity.
Unit 2: Mechanics, Materials and Waves.
Unit 3: Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Physics.
A2: A one year course normally taken in year 13
Topics covered include:
Unit 4: Fields and Further Mechanics.
Unit 5:5D Nuclear Physics, Thermal Physics and Optional Topic.
Unit 6: Investigative and Practical Skills in A2 Physics.

Particles, quantum phenomena and electricity (20%)
Mechanics, materials and waves (20%)
Coursework (10%)
Field and further mechanics (20%)
Nuclear and thermal physics (10%)
Option topic (10%)
Coursework (10 %)


Entry requirements

Grade B or above in either Physics or Science (Double Award). Physics at both AS and A2 level requires a lot of mathematical manipulation; consequently, grade B in GCSE Mathematics is beneficial.

Future opportunities

These are many options available both in the private and public sector, ranging from power generation to the Ministry of Defence. At the top level this could involve working at the frontiers of Physics discovery. You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as Chemistry, Biology or Electronics to prepare for higher education in a science related subject or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Physics such as Science Technician or Electronics Engineer. The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
