GCSE English Literature at Kingston College

Course description

If you are planning to do English at A Level then GCSE English Literature is an essential subject to consider. You will improve your understanding and knowledge of literature in each genre – fiction, drama and poetry – as well as developing your academic writing skills.

Course content

This course will be examined under the 9-1 GCSE specification. The GCSE has two written exams. Paper 1 is worth 40% of the final mark; students will study a play by Shakespeare and a 19th century novel. Paper 2 is worth 60% of the final mark; students will study a modern prose or drama text and compare and contrast several poems.

Entry requirements

The normal offer for entry on to the GCSE course is four GCSEs at grade 3 or above. This must include a GCSE English subject at a minimum of grade 3. This course can only be studied as part of the Full Time GCSE course alongside another four GCSE subjects.

Future opportunities

If a student achieves at least a grade 5 they will be able to progress to an A Level English subject. If a student achieves a grade 4 they will be able to continue on to a Level 3 vocational course.
