A Level Chemistry at Ruislip High School

Course description

The OCR Chemistry A specification is followed. At AS level students take two written examinations. The first module focuses on the foundation chemistry skills of quantitative chemistry, structure and bonding, acids and alkalis, redox reactions and periodicity.  This module is examined in January.  The second module builds on the first, and covers organic chemistry and analysis, rates of reaction, equilibria, enthalpy changes, chemistry of the air and green chemistry. This module is examined in June.

The A2 course builds on AS Chemistry understanding and again consists of two modules. Module 3 consists of organic chemistry and analysis and is examined in January. Unit 4 covers rates of reactions, equilibria, acids, energy and entropy and transition elements. This unit is examined in June.

Coursework at both AS and A2 level consists of three assessed tasks. The Quantitative Task involves a practical exercise where measurements are taken, and are then used to complete a calculation. In this task students are assessed on both the accuracy and precision of their measurements. The Qualitative Task is a practical exercise which assesses both observation and inference skills. The Evaluative Task is a written paper which focuses on evaluating an experiment.  Altogether the coursework comprises 20% of each year.
