A Level History of Art at Watford Grammar School for Boys

Course description

AS Outline At AS, candidates will work within an established framework to develop a strong foundation knowledge of History of Art. The specification concentrates on developing the ability to analyse and interpret a variety of works of architecture, painting and sculpture, alongside an understanding of some of the major themes.

The AS specification has 2 units:

Unit 1: This involves analysing and interpreting works of painting, sculpture and architecture.

Unit 2: Provides candidates with an appreciation of some significant art historical themes from Classical Greece to the art of the twentieth century.

The A2 specification has 2 units:

Unit 3: This unit requires the study of the following topic: Art and Architecture in nineteenth-century Europe.

Unit 4: Requires the study of the following topic: Currently 16th Century Renaissance.

No practical art work is involved at AS or A2 There is no coursework for AS or A2

Entry requirements

Students wishing to enter the Sixth Form must achieve a minimum of six GCSEs at grade B. GCSE Grade A in either English Literature, English Language, History, Religious Studies or Classical Civilisation. You should have strong written skills and have a keen interest in Art although no practical skill is required.
