Chemistry AS A2 at Kettering Buccleuch Academy

Course description

This syllabus is intended to provide a coherent course of study not only for candidates who may proceed later to Higher Education but also for those whose formal education in this subject may not extend beyond Advanced or AS level. It has been designed for candidates who have completed a GCSE course in chemistry or double science.

Students are supported throughout the course by tutorials and close monitoring of their progress through homework and tests.

Course content

  • Broad based content, covering physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.
  • Modern developments in chemistry and its application in industry, pharmaceuticals and the environment.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry onto the course is GCSE grade C, but candidates with grade B or better will probably be more able to cope with the course. It is expected that candidates will be competent in Maths and English (GCSE grade C and above).


AS 10% coursework, 90% examinations

A2 10% coursework, 90% examinations

Further information

Chemistry 'A' level is essential for Higher Education courses in medicine, biochemistry, etc. It is a useful foundation for all science courses at higher levels e.g. physics, earth sciences, veterinary science, etc. and as an academic supporting subject.
