Health and Social Care Level 1 (Hillsborough) at Sheffield College

Course description

This is a 1 year full time course.

About the course

This course is great if you are interested in a career in the health and social care sector. This could include caring for the elderly in a care home, working with adults or children with disabilities or helping people recover from illness or injury in a hospital or care centre.

It is an excellent starting point for young people who are interested in learning about work or further study in health and social care. It helps develop the personal skills, qualities and attitude required.

This course is mix of practical activities and classroom based work. You will learn about:

  • Health and social care needs
  • Personal care
  • Communication skills in health and social care
  • Creative and leisure activities for children and adults
  • Learning experiences for children and young people
  • Promoting healthy eating
  • Rights and responsibilities at work
  • Job opportunities in health and social care

You will also be expected to study for English and maths qualifications. 

Course enrichment activities can include trips, visits, and talks by guest speakers. Health and social care professionals come in to college to work with you on practical activities.

You may be entitled to help from the college’s Learner Support Fund with the cost of trips, visits and anything else you need to buy for your course.

You will learn from highly qualified staff with a range of academic and health and social care work related backgrounds. Students also benefit from our strong partnerships with local health and social care employers.

The excellent facilities for our health and social care students include well equipped learning areas and medical practice room/s.

Qualification Title

Edexcel BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Health and Social Care


Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above including English Language



The course is assessed using a range of methods; this could include tasks such as designing a poster or written assignments.



Financial information


At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.

Free meals

If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.

Travel passes

Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

Where can it lead?

The next step could be to the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care or to other courses at this level.  It does not prepare students for a specific job role, but supports them in preparing for the next steps in education or training.
