VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Media, Hair & Make-up Artistry at Selby College

Course description

Interested in working in the dynamic and exciting world of Hair & Make-up for the media and entertainment industry? This one-year Level 2 Diploma has been specially designed to enable you to learn aspects of both hairdressing and media make-up. You will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare you for employment as a Junior Hair & Make-up Artist, including planning and providing make-up applications, hair preparation services, fashion and editorial make-up and face and body painting.

Course content

 You will study the following units:

• Health, safety and hygiene

• Make-up applications

• Hair preparation services

• Continuity planning for make-up services

• Dress and finish hair services

• Continuity hair services

• Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists

• Total look for competition work

• Face and body art painting

• Fashion and editorial make-up

You will be taught by a team of subject specialists in our state-of-the-art salon, which is open to the general public and mirrors high-street salons; you will be assessed in aspects of Hair and Make-up Artistry but also on professionalism, punctuality and reliability. Learners develop their communication and customer service skills, as well as commercial awareness – all highly valued by employers. Problem-solving, team working and research skills will also be developed. You will be expected to complete two weeks’ work experience. This may involve travelling some distance and working late evenings where necessary.

Please note: If you have not achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and/or Maths you will be required to continue studying these alongside your college course.

Entry requirements

Standard Level 2 entry requirements apply. For this course you will preferably have two GCSEs at Grade 4 or above in English and a Science.


30% Exam, 50% Practical, 20% Internal Assessment

Future opportunities

On successful completion you may choose to progress directly into employment as a Hair & Make-up artist in a variety of contexts including theatre, film, print media, photographic studios, Beauty and/or Hair salons, self-employment, the NHS or even product manufacturing and training. Students may also choose to progress to a Level 3 qualification in Theatrical & Media Make-up or Hairdressing.
