Course description

Why study this subject at Hayesfield?

Having an understanding of Mathematical processes is a valuable skill to support other subjects. This course is for students who have done well at GCSE and want to continue with some Maths but do not wish to take the full A Level Maths course.

This course is equivalent to half an A Level and should be studied in addition to your main choices.

Course content

The course includes sections on statistics, probability, linear programming, personal finance and use of data.

All study is in the context of real-life situations and extends Mathematical skills to above GCSE level. Some topics are taken from the A Level Maths syllabus.

Entry requirements

Grade 4 or above at GCSE Maths.

Ability to be thorough in methods and learn systems. Logical thinking


Termly internal tests throughout Year 12 and 13.

Two written externally assessed exams in June of Year 13.

Paper 1 - Comprehension.

Paper 2 - Application.

Future opportunities

Core Maths is recommended for students who wish to study Sciences, Engineering or Social Sciences at Higher Education.
