Course description

This course is for those people who like working in practical roles that offer challenge and variety.
All levels include a wide range of activities and you will learn skills that are associated with industrial installations, inspection and testing, fault finding and diagnosis. Students will complete tutorials, practical work and study functional skills for the construction industry.

Course content

• Lighting circuits
• Rings and radials (sockets)
• Cooker circuits
• Shower circuits
• 17th edition consumer unit installations
• Single and three line motors and associated starters
• Generators including micro generation theory
• Data circuit points
• SWA Sub-mains
• Installation of fire alarms, burglar alarms, door entry systems and emergency lights
• Various containment systems – PVC/Steel Trunking PVC/Steel conduit, Cable tray
• Various wiring systems – PVC/PVC, PVC singles, MIMS cable, SWA/SY cable, FP200, Cat 5e and telephone wire
• Intruder alarm systems and communication systems

Entry requirements

GCSE grade C in Mathematics, English and Science. Entrants with grade D’s will be considered subject to initial assessment and diagnostics.

Financial information

No cost for 16-19 year olds.

Future opportunities

Completing this course allows you to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation, an apprenticeship or National Diploma in Electronic Engineering.

      By Road: 
      The Middleton Campus is two miles from junction 20 on the M62. Take the A627(M) towards Oldham and leave at first junction and follow signs to Middleton.
      By Rail: 
      The Castleton rail station is 2 miles from the Middleton campus, and takes around ten minutes to reach by bus.
      By Bus: 
      The No. 17 bus service runs frequent between Rochdale and Manchester approximately every ten minutes and stops at the entrance to the Middleton Campus.
