English Language & Literature A-Level at Landau Forte Sixth Form College

Course description

Literature provides a window into the world and a close reflection on how societies and cultures behave and interact. The combined study of both English Literature and English Language is empowering given that Language Study shapes the way we think and determines what we think about. To be able to understand how language works and particularly how we communicate and represent speech is powerful:

‘Language is power, life and the instrument of culture, the instrument of domination and liberation.’ (Angela Carter)

This specification is designed to develop the understanding of English Language and Literature as a combined discipline and draw on experiences at GCSE as well as offering a secure foundation for the study of English beyond A-level. It will develop interest in and enjoyment of independent reading, whilst developing candidates’ ability to make personal responses as critics of both literary and nonliterary texts. The variety of assessment styles used, such as re-creative writing, commentary writing, discursive essays and research-based investigative writing, allows students to develop a wide range of skills. These include the ability to read critically, analyse, evaluate and undertake independent research, which are essential both for further study and future employment.
