French AS/A Level at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College

Course description

This course will allow you to develop your fluency and understanding of the French language. You will learn about the concerns which affect people’s lives in French speaking countries. You will have the opportunity to spend a week living in France as part of this course.

Course content

For AS Level you will study social issues and trends, artistic culture, grammar and a literary text or film.

In addition, at A Level you will study political culture and a literary text.

There are likely to be two written papers and an oral exam for AS Level, and two written papers and an oral exam at A Level. The skills assessed will be: listening and responding, reading and responding, translation from French into English, translation from English into French, writing in French (based on the film and text(s) studied) and knowledge of grammar.

Entry requirements

  • At least five GCSEs at grade C or above (to include English Language and B in French at GCSE)
  • You need a good memory and the ability to organise and analyse material
  • An interest in French language and culture
  • Students are encouraged to participate in the exchange with our partner school in Gaillac

Future opportunities

Studying a Modern Foreign Language can lead to a degree in that language, and will also combine well with other disciplines such as Law, Business or Education.

Further information

During the course, lessons will include listening practice, reading a variety of texts and articles, discussions, presentations and role-plays, as well as comprehension tasks, essay writing and translation.

You will have access to listening facilities, audio files and grammar and vocabulary learning exercises. A range of books and magazines are available in the college library.
