Mathematics AS & A Level at Presdales School

Course description

The AS course consists of two Core Mathematics modules plus an applications module. 

By the completion of the full A level course you will have studied four Core Mathematics modules and two applications modules.

The Core Mathematics modules extend work on number, algebra and shape and space topics from the National Curriculum and are extremely helpful for all science subjects.

The two applications modules will be chosen from:

Statistics modules which deal with data handling and complement Psychology, Biology, Geography and Economics.

Decision Mathematics modules which cover logical thinking and problem solving, complementing Computer Science, Business Studies and Operations Research.

Mechanics modules which apply mathematics to problems in the real world and relate well to Physics, Engineering and higher studies of Mathematics.

Entry requirements

Students are required to have obtained at least a grade A in GCSE Mathematics.


Each module is assessed by a one and a half hour written examination in June of Year 12 or in June of Year 13 as appropriate.

Future opportunities

There is an excellent range of career prospects for students with a mathematics qualification. The major sectors employing mathematicians are finance, computing, electronics and engineering, although there is a vast range of potential jobs. With a background in mathematics you will be highly employable as it shows a logical mind.

    • Presdales is a five-form entry all-ability school which became an Academy on 1st April 2012, for girls aged from eleven to eighteen. Boys are welcomed into the Sixth Form. Founded as Ware Grammar School for Girls in 1906 on the Amwell House site, it moved to its present site at Presdales in 1964. Since 1975 – when the school’s intake was enlarged – we have accepted girls from a wide area of Hertfordshire.

      The school was rated ‘outstanding’ at all four inspections in 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2008. Language College status was granted by the DfES in 1995 and, on the strength of the school’s high performance overall, Music College status with English as an accompanying strand was awarded in 2006, followed by Mathematics & Computing College status with a Gifted & Talented focus in 2008.
