Level 3 Applied IT at Leeds City College

Course description

The course is ideal in giving you an insight into the various career options in IT.

You will have the opportunity to study new skills in areas such as Hardware & Software Installation and Maintenance, Games Design and Development, Database Design, Graphics, Web Design and other units that will prepare you for employment or apprenticeships in a variety of areas of the IT industry, or enable you to apply for Degree level education.

Course content

You will study 6 units throughout each year from the ones listed below:

  • Computing and Employability Skills for IT
  • Computer Systems
  • Information Systems Digital Graphics
  • Database Design
  • Website Production
  • Organisational System Security
  • IT Systems Troubleshooting and Repair
  • IT Technical Support
  • Computer Games Design
  • Developing Computer Games
  • Installing and upgrading software

In addition to studying your main programme you will also develop your skills in Maths and English as required, along with project development work and work experience with local businesses. You will also have tutorial sessions in which an Individual Learning Plan will be set and your progress monitored to ensure you reach your maximum potential.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above; to include both Maths and English Language at Grade C(or equivalent). A Level 2 NVQ or Level 2 Diploma at Merit Grade; with both Maths and English at Level 2. A Higher Diploma (equivalent to 7 GCSEs at Grades A* ­ C); consideration will be given to those who achieve the Principal Learning on the Higher Diploma and have other L2 qualifications to support their entry. You will be placed on the course that matches your qualifications at interview.


All the programme units are assignment based (both practical and written).

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course will lead to the award of a BTEC Level 3 60 Credit Certificate in IT.
We will support you in UCAS applications and progression to work.
