Sport (Level 2) at Central College Nottingham

Course description

The majority of this programme will be undertaken within the workplace. This could be at a Leisure Centre, a School, coaching a sports team or in a gym/fitness environment. There will also be occasional class-based sessions at college. You will need to have a contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week for a 12 month period.

Course content

  • NVQ Level 2 (competence qualification)
  • Level 2 Award in Employment Awareness in Active Leisure & Learning
  • Other industry/coaching qualifications as directed by the employer
  • Functional Skills in Maths and English

English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

You should have 5 GCSEs at grades D or above. You will need to have a contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week for a 12 month period. A good reference will be required.


You will be regularly assessed in the workplace and will produce an e-portfolio of evidence to show your understanding of the knowledge required. Assessments will include a combination of practical observations, verbal discussions, written assignments and case studies.

Future opportunities

On completion you may well achieve a full time position with your employer. If you wish to continue studying you will need good tutor and employer recommendations. It is possible to progress onto the one of the following:

  • Level 3 Apprenticeship
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)
  • BTEC Level 3 Diplomas in Sport, Media and Journalism or Sport, Business and Marketing
  • CYQ Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training

Further information

You will be required to obtain employment in a Sports / Leisure setting before enrolling. You will need to fund your own travel costs to placement. You will be paid an apprentice wage which will be approximately £95 a week if you work for the minimum of 30 hours. You are expected to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
