You want a career within the football or sport industry and have a passion for and strong ability in football.
Not only will you complete a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence), but you will also have the opportunity to train and learn within a professional football environment. The course is based at the outstanding Goals Soccer Centre in Newcastle, providing you with the opportunity to develop as a player, and learn and work with the experienced workforce at Goals Soccer Centre to develop industry specific skills and access part-time employment opportunities.
You will also examine the ethics and values in Sport, the role of the professional sportsperson, sports psychology and the principles of coaching. You will have the option to complete a Level 1 Football Coaching Award, First Aid and Basic Referee’s Award. You will also complete a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing, which will enable you to work in the fitness industry.
As a student on the Football Excellence Programme you will also be able to access the following:
- Membership to the state-of-the-art gym at Goals Soccer Centres
- Training for up to 12 hours per week involving team training, individual fitness work and squad strength and conditioning sessions
- Play in the Elite Category 1 National Colleges League
- A discounted Nike training and leisure kit
- Free access to US Scholarship opportunities through work with PASS4SOCCER at the College
- Opportunities to work alongside Newcastle United Foundation staff and their coaching programmes
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including English Language and Maths; or a Merit in a Sport qualification at Level 2 along with Cs in English Language and Maths. An interview with a course tutor is also required and you need to be successful at TyneMet's Football Excellence programme trials.
You will be assessed through your coursework, which includes: projects, group presentations, podcasts and practical work.
You could progress onto a wide range of university degrees in areas such as, Sport & Exercise Science, Sports Coaching, Sports Development, Sports Management, Sports Therapy,
Strength and Conditioning, Sports Psychology and Sports Nutrition. You also have the option to study a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching or Exercise Health & Fitness at TyneMet, awarded by the University of Sunderland.
