Music Technology AS and A2 level at Monks Walk School
For those students who enjoy creating music using technology (with programmes like Cubase, Logic or Reason) and have a particular interest in learning the technology skills to record and produce their own music, then this course is for them. Traditionally followed by students interested in popular music, this course integrates further study of aspects of music theory and listening skills with sound engineering and MIDI skills.
Students will cover three main areas of study:
- the principles and practice of music technology
- popular music styles since 1910
- the development of technology based music
The AS course comprises three coursework tasks (in which students demonstrate their ability to make multitrack recordings and use MIDI to create specific pieces and arrangements) and a listening exam, partly focused in depth on 2 popular music styles. This will require good research skills and understanding of the history of recording and musical genres.
The A2 also comprises three coursework tasks (building on the skills learnt in AS, with a stronger depth of knowledge on the quality of production of recordings and compositions) and a listening and practical exam, based on what students have learnt across the year.
A*- B at GCSE, equivalent or similar subject, or successful interview. APS: 40 or above.
