Chemistry A level at Tupton Hall School
The emphasis of the course is to develop knowledge and understanding of scientific theories, to analyse information and identify patterns and to be able to apply this knowledge to familiar and unfamiliar situations.
Practical work is important as it develops skills in how to plan experiments, how to use complex apparatus accurately and safely, how to make accurate observations and measurements and how to draw conclusions from the results. Communicating information about theoretical and practical work is also an important skill.
Students intending to take the AS or A2 Level course should ideally already have at least either a grade B at GCSE in Chemistry or a grade B in GCSE Additional Science and a grade B in GCSE Core Science, although in some exceptional circumstances a grade C may be considered. It is also desirable to have a reasonable level of ability in Mathematics (a minimum of grade C).
