Course description

A-level History provides a broad, coherent and satisfying course of study for students.

The specification requires student to study:

  • the history of more than one country or state or the history of more than one period
  • aspects of the past in breadth, through period(s) or theme(s), and in-depth
  • significant individuals, societies, events, developments and issues within a broad historical context
  • developments affecting different groups within the societies studied
  • a range of appropriate historical perspectives, for example: aesthetic; cultural; economic; ethnic; political; religious; scientific; social or technological.

Course content

History is incredibly useful to so many careers; law, business, marketing, journalism, media and broadcasting, international diplomacy, social work and psychology to name a few. The unique focus that History places upon empathy is of huge importance in the 21st Century, as our world becomes increasingly divided and threatened by global warming, racial hatred, international warmongering & increasingly sophisticated methods of media brainwashing and disinformation.

A Level Content:

Unit 1: British Breadth Study 1851-1964
This topic looks at the development of Britain over approximately 100 years. During this incredible time, Britain changed from a society that was dominated by class and privilege to one where everyone could vote and achievement on merit became more important. Practically every facet of society that we regard as important today, education, welfare and economy developed at breakneck speed during this period. In Year 12, a period of dramatic change in Britain’s past - Victorian and Edwardian Britain, c1851–1914 is the focus. This includes the biggest political rivalry of the last 200 years Gladstone v Disraeli and the impact this had on Britain’s political landscape. Industrial growth, foreign policy and the Irish question are also covered. This links to our planned visit to Dublin, the home of the 1916 Easter Rising. In Year 13, the Great War and the impact it had leads into the social transformation of Britain 1939-64. This focuses on the growth of consumerism and finishes with the generational change after the war that stemmed from contraception and rock and roll music!

Unit 2 Depth study - 2N Revolution and Dictatorship: Russia, 1917–1953
The Impact of Stalin’s Leadership in the USSR, 1917-53 (source based exam)

This unit provides an opportunity to investigate the impact of one of the most incredible areas of History: Stalinist rule on the USSR. Students study Stalin’s ruthless rise to power, his use of propaganda, terror and industrial and agricultural policies. Topic content covers issues of political authority, the power of individuals and the inter-relationship of governmental and economic and social change As with unit 1, we assess motives and actual impact on the country. We look at whether there was evolution or revolution and what state the USSR was on the eve of Nazi invasion in 1941 & by Stalin’s death in 1953?

Coursework Unit:
And now for something completely different! Russia 1696-1796 was a truly remarkable period of History. Characterised by the hugely controversial and dramatic reigns of Peter and Catherine The Great, the period was one of often rapid and forgotten changes in government, culture, society and the military. Students set their own question, get to criticise historians and are very well supported in researching widely. The 100 year focus includes the fascinating and even more controversial rule of lesser known rulers such as Anna Ioannovna and Elizabeth Petrovna. This unit has it all, themes of revolution, evolution, change, continuity, progression, regression, along with torture, repression, scandal and some brilliantly controversies. We examine who contributed the most to change in the period, whether the Tsars did more than the Tsarinas to modernise Russia and whether reputations of different leaders are deserved and how valid different viewpoints are.

Unit 2 - 2 hours 30 mins exam - 40% of final mark
Unit 3 – 3500 word essay on a thematic question covering 100 years – 20% of final mark

In partnership with Russell Group Universities, we continue to work hard to realise this ambition and to ensure that, as well as excellent teaching, our students receive the correct guidance and support needed to make successful applications to Higher Education.

We are very proud of the achievements made by last year’s students. 92% of the students progressed to a University course of their choice. 91% of our students gained 3 or more A-Levels and 46% of the grades were A*-B. Students were also successful in their applications to competitive programmes such as Cambridge University, Dentistry and Medicine. We look forward to building on this success with the students who choose to join us in the future.

We offer a range of 23 different A-Level subjects, enabling students to choose subject combinations to progress to all available Higher Education courses. All of our courses are taught by subject specialists with degrees in the subjects they are teaching, and with strong track records in A-Level teaching. Students are also encouraged to integrate work experience placements with their studies in order to gain the practical and transferable skills required for many careers.

Students have the choice of choosing three or four A-Level subjects. We expect that most students will specialise to three subjects by the time they enter Y13. All students are also given the opportunity to complete the Extended Project Qualification over the two years, and we are increasingly finding that this improves the quality of student’s applications to University and employment opportunities.

Sixth Form is not solely about the study of the academic subjects. We offer students a range of enrichment opportunities, improved social facilities and privileges so that our students can enjoy life as a Sixth Form student both inside and outside of the classroom and that they can play a leading role in helping to develop the school. By providing these opportunities alongside a strong curriculum, we believe that Bradfield Sixth Form is an environment ‘where people thrive’ and where people can make the most of their talents and realise their potential.
