Art and Design A Level at Coombeshead Academy
With both the A Level and AS Level courses students develop an interest in,
enthusiasm for, and enjoyment of Art. The programme of study will stimulate
- creative and intuitive capabilities
- practical technical and expressive skills
- aesthetic understanding and critical judgement
Students are encouraged to develop an independence of mind so they can refine
and communicate their ideas and intentions to create their own personal
outcomes. They gain experience of not only working with a broad range of media,
but knowledge and experience of:-
- real world contexts
- links to the creative industries
In Art the focus will be on developing drawing and image making skills using a
variety of different materials. Students will often work on large scale pieces; finished
prolonged pieces are developed on from sketchbook, journal and experimental
Evidence of abilitydemonstrated with examples of work may be accepted in place of a high grade GCSE but usually students will have obtained at least grade B.
Assessment takes the form of the production of pieces of work created in response
to a question set by the Examination Board. Four areas are assessed.
Development of ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by
contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding
Exploration and selection of appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques
and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops
Recording of ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting
critically on work and progress
Presentation of personal and meaningful responses that realises intentions and,
where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements
Art A Level is accepted by Higher Education institutions for University entrance and
can be combined with almost any other subject.
A good A Level grade would help secure a place at Art College if considering a
career in some aspect of Art and Design.
Not only are there a huge range of career possibilities for Art College graduates,
general job prospects are good: Fashion, Textiles, Jewellery, Furniture, Photography,
Film, Sculpture, Ceramics, Graphic Design Printing, etc. In addition, students can
embark on careers such as Teaching or Occupational Therapy.
