Why should I study French?

An A Level in languages is becoming more and more sought after. This course covers many contemporary issues which are relevant to young people today:

• Media – TV, advertising, communication technology

• Popular culture – Cinema, music, fashion trends

• Healthy living and lifestyles – Sport / exercise, health and well-being, holidays

• Family relationships – Relationships within the family, friendship, marriage / partnerships

What skills can I gain from studying French?

Through studying ‘AS’ French, you will build on the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills gained at GCSE. Being able to communicate in another language is a vital skill which will not only enhance your employment prospects but will also facilitate foreign travel. You will gain an insight into another culture and society and the study of ‘AS’ French will provide you with a sound basis for further study.

 

 

Entry requirements

National data suggests that successful students have a GCSE point score of 45.4 or more or alternatively have achieved an A*- B grade in GCSE French.

Future opportunities

A foreign language qualification is highly valued by employers and university admissions tutors. Not only is it essential for the more obvious career choices, translating, interpreting, teaching, travel and tourism, but a foreign language can also compliment studies in law, journalism, technology etc. The acquisition of language learning skills also puts a student in a strong position for learning another foreign language ‘ab initio’.
