Pathway to Independence at Derby College
This course is aimed at individuals who have additional learning needs and who wish to further develop skills which will help them become more independent in the future.
You will complete a personalised programme. Following an initial assessment period at the beginning of your programme, you and your personal tutor will devise an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will identify agreed targets for learning and the activities you will complete to support you in achieving these targets.
The activities you may take part in include:
- Travel training to support you in accessing public transport independently
- Food preparation which includes budgeting, shopping and either basic meal preparation or more advanced meal or food preparation
- Creative projects
- Media/ICT projects
- Projects working in the community
In all activities, you will be practising your practical maths and English skills.
There are no formal entry requirements. You will have an individual guidance interview to assess your needs and suitability for the course.
You will be initially assessed for a period of time at the beginning of the course to help devise your personalised programme. Assessment will then be on-going throughout the year. You will review your progress within each activity with the tutor and support staff - and your progress towards your targets will be reviewed with your personal tutor each half term.
The support you receive in each class will be reviewed throughout the year.
If, at the end of the year, you have made good progress and have the potential to achieve more, there may be the opportunity to complete another year on this programme.
You can also consider progressing to a higher level course at the College or to seek employment and training.
