Music AS/A Level at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College

Course description

The AS and A2 music courses both develop the main strands of music from GCSE course, increasing in both content and academic focus, as well as expecting higher standards  in performance and general musicianship.

In both AS and A2 courses students take their performance and compostion skills to a higher level, and develop their understanding of music through the study of set works.

Course content

Whether preparing exam pieces, conducting ensembles or playing through set works, performance is at the heart of music making and understanding. Musical understanding is developed through performance of and listening to set works, alongside analysis, score reading, research, broader study and discussion.

 

 

Assessment

AS Level:

Unit 1: Performing - 5-6 minute performance 15%

Unit 2: Composing - One compostion assignment 15%

Unit 3: Musical Understanding - Set works and musical analysis 20%

A Level:

Unit 4 : Performing - 15 minute performance 15%

Unit 5: Composing - 2 compostions/technical studies 15%

Unit 6: Further Muscial Understanding Set works and musical analysis 20%

Future opportunities

The AS and A2 courses combine well with all other subjects - students with AS/A2 music are regarded highly by all higher education providers.
