Course description

A-level in a modern foreign language helps students to develop confident, effective communication skills in French, German or Spanish and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where the target language is spoken. It develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context.
The A Level in French, German or Spanish comprises four units which require students to develop their ability to write and speak in French, German or Spanish with accurate grammar and syntax for a range of purposes, and to understand written or spoken French, German or Spanish in a variety of contexts and genres.
This course is particularly suitable for students who have studied GCSE French, German or Spanishto at least grade B standard and who wish to study a modern foreign language at a higher level. Students will develop skills which will give them a lasting appreciation of language and learning. They are able to develop the ability to comprehend French, German or Spanish in a range of contexts and to communicate readily in the target language for a variety of purposes.
Students acquire a useful knowledge of and insights into French, German or Spanish-speaking cultures, both contemporary and historic as well as valuable skills for foreign travel, further education and employment. The over-arching topics of study for A/S Level in Year 12 are:
