Hair and Beauty Studies - Higher Diploma at University Academy Keighley

Course description

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a brand new course that involves a range of Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy Skills. It will give you the knowledge and skills that you will need for college, university or work in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way.

Course content

The Diploma will include Principal Learning, a Project, 10 days work experience and general learning including Functional Skills, ICT, English and Maths.The Principal Learning qualification in the Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies is made up from 10 units. All are mandatory. These are as follows:Safe and healthy working practices in the hair and beauty sector and related industriesExploring hand care and nail artThe world of hair and beautyThe science of hair and beautyCommunication and client care in the hair and beauty sectorThe history of hair and beauty in societyPromoting and selling products and services by professional recommendation in the hair and beauty sectorSalon and business systems and processesExploring skin care and make-upExploring hair care and stylingThe Diploma is a great new way of combining class work with hands on experience. This new qualification allows lots of opportunity to come into contact with people who are employed in this industry. You will learn how to work with other people and express yourself confidently in a work environment by developing personal, learning and thinking skills.

Entry requirements

You will need to demonstrate a general interest in Hair and Beauty. You will need to demonstrate Level 4 at Key Stage 2 SATs or have 5 predicted GCSEs at grades A - C or have successfully completed the Foundation Level Diploma. You will be required to provide references and attend an interview.If you are under 16 this is a two year course; if you are over 16 it is a one year course.


There are seveal ways this course can be assessed.By building up a portfolio of evidenceCourseworkThrough practical demonstrationsPractical assessmentsA written examinationThe Advanced Diploma is a level 2 qualification and is the equivalent of 7 GCSEs at A* to C.The Diploma is graded A*/A/B/CYou will be expected to provide basic equipment such as pens, pencils and paper. You will be expected to find some of your own resources for practical sessions and your portfolios. There may be a requirement to pay some travel costs if going out to an employer's premises for work experience opportunities.

Future opportunities

The qualification will provide opportunities for progression onto the next Diploma level or NVQ and/or Apprenticeship programmes.Employers have been involved in the development of the Diploma. The course offers progression opportunities for future employment within the hair and Beauty sectors and related industries. This new course has been developed with the relevant employers and Habia (Sector Skills Council).
