Games and Digital Academy Level 3 at West Lancashire College

Course description

This new and exciting Academy will prepare you with the skills and knowledge for a range of careers in one of the fastest growing industries in the UK.

Course content

There are two pathways in our Games and Digital Academy which share common units. One pathway is designed for those students interested in a career in the IT / digital industries and one for those who want to develop digital art skills.


Course core units will include:
> Games Design 
> Games Platforms & Technologies
> Digital Graphics 
> 2D and 3D Animation
> Web Animation
> The computer games industry and story development

IT Pathway units include:
> Employability skills for the IT industry
> Computer systems
> Information Systems

Art & Design Pathway units include:
> Drawing
> Graphic design
> Photography
> Traditional 2D and 3D media

You will develop skills on both PC and Apple Mac Suites, with industry standard software and the latest technology.

Learners will undertake a period of work experience appropriate to your course as part of the programme of study.

Maths and English will be part of your programme of study and you will study qualifications in Maths and English, appropriate to your level of ability, alongside your chosen course.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including both English and Maths), preferably a Grade B in an Art / IT related subject and/or a Level 2 Diploma in a related subject.


This is a practical course, assessment is based primarily on coursework produced in IT suites and / or art studios. All units are graded individually and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded (Pass, Merit or Distinction).

Future opportunities

Following completion of Level 3 learners may wish to progress on to university to study a range of courses including Games Design, Digital and Interactive Media, Graphic Design, Animation, IT, Software Design, Web Design and Multi Media Design.

Future employment options could include: Games Designer, Graphic Designer, IT Technician, Web Designer, Animator, App Developer, Computer Programmer or Software Developer.
