Business Studies A Level at Don Valley School and Performing Arts College

Course description

In Year 12 students will study 2 units. Planning and financing a Business which is 40% of the overall AS marks and managing a Business which is 60% of the overall marks for AS. In Year 13 a further 2 units are studied. Strategies for success and the Business Environment and Managing change. Both components account for 25% of the overall A2 marks.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or better. No more than two applied courses can count towards this total and each applied course counted has the equivalence of only one GCSE, regardless of its nominal size. In addition, students must achieve the specific entry requirements which may apply to this course.


Year 12 students will take 2 unit examinations to obtain an AS qualification. The first is a 1 hour 15 minutes exam with 2 stimulus response questions. The remaining exam is 1 hour 30 minutes data response exam.

In Year 13 2 more unit exams are taken. One based on an unseen case study and one based on a pre-released case study.

Future opportunities

This course would be of interest to any student thinking of leaving school after sixth form and entering the business, marketing world, or those considering moving on to University who will benefit from knowledge and skills useful to modern businesses.

Business Studies combines well with all other A’ level subjects.
